Active population

Includes those who have declared that they are working (regardless of their status) and unemployed people seeking work.

Active population rate

Ratio between the active population as defined for the purposes of the census (people who are working and unemployed people who are seeking work) and the total corresponding population (those aged 17 or older).

Age

Calculated in years completed on the population census reference date.

Building

For the purposes of the census, a building is a construction that may have several entrances that are interconnected; on the other hand, a construction with several separate entrances which do not interconnect is counted as several buildings.

Census reference date

Date on which the population census is conducted. Individuals surveyed must base their answers to the census questions on this specific date in order to ensure that data is processed on a level footing. It enables a “snapshot” of the Principality to be taken at a specific point in time. The reference date was set as midnight on 7 June 2016.

Community

A group of residential premises under the management of a single authority, where residents generally share a common way of life. The community’s population includes the people who live in the community, with the exception of those who live in staff housing. For the purposes of the census, the following are considered to be communities: the Princess Grace Dance Academy, the AS Monaco Football Club training centre, the Rainier III Clinical Gerontology Centre, the Hector Otto Foundation, the Turquois Foundation, the Princess Charlene Children’s Home, the A Qietüdine residence, religious communities and the prison.

Computer equipment

Includes desktop computers, laptops and touchscreen tablets in main residences.

Contract “Habitation-Capitalisation” (CHC)

A contract conferring a personal right to live in a state-owned residence, in return for payment and for a period of 75 years, to an individual of Monegasque nationality.

Employment contract

Enables working people to be classified according to whether their main job is permanent or for a fixed term. For the purposes of the population census, apprentices, staff placed by temporary employment agencies, paid interns, seasonal workers and other employees on fixed-term contracts are all included under the category “fixed term”.

Employment rate

Ratio between the number of working people as defined for the purposes of the census (people who have declared that they are working) and the total corresponding population (those aged 17 or older).

Equipped residence rate

Ratio between the number of equipped main residences and the total number of main residences.

Former residence

Place of residence on 1 January of the year of the last census.

Household reference person

Determined based on the structure of the household and the characteristics of the individuals who comprise it: in Monaco, the criteria used, in order of importance, are: reached the age of majority, of Monegasque nationality, working, the oldest.

Household size

Relates to the number of occupants in a main residence.

Household (type)

Two types of household are recognised in the Principality for the purpose of the census: ordinary households and communities.

Inhabitant

A person who declares their main residence to be in the Principality of Monaco on the census reference date.

Inhabitant weight

Used to adjust the number of inhabitants of main residences which have not provided a response.

Living as a couple

A declared situation which makes no reference to possible cohabitation within the same main residence, to the family structure of the household to which the person belongs, or to their marital status.

Main employment situation

This is used to determine the number of people who are in work, unemployed or not working.

Main residence

Residence (or separate room) in which one or more people usually live. The main residence is the residence where an individual lives most of the time. A mobile residence (boat), a hotel room, or a residence within a hotel may also be categorised as a main residence.

Marital status

There are five options for marital status in the Principality of Monaco: single, married, divorced, separated and widowed. For the purposes of the census, the status “Separated but not divorced” is included under the “Married” category.

Mean age

The mean age of the individuals who make up the population.

Median age

Age that divides the population into two numerically equal groups – half the people are younger than this age and the other half are older.

Mode of transport

Main mode of transport used to travel around Monaco.

Motorised vehicle

Includes both cars and motorised two-wheel vehicles.

Nationality

Legal link tying an individual to a specific state. An individual can have several nationalities. Multinational residents are therefore counted as part of as many groups as they have nationalities. Correspondingly, individuals who hold French and Italian nationality are counted as part of both the total number of French nationals and the total number of Italian nationals. However, Monegasques are only recorded as Monegasque, regardless of whether they hold one or several nationalities.

Non-employees

 This group includes “self-employed workers”, “salaried company directors, CEOs and minority shareholder managers in SARL (± limited liability companies)” and “people who assist others in their work without remuneration”. They are included as part of the working population (or residents aged 17 or over who are currently in work).

Number of rooms

Number of rooms used for habitation or professional purposes in a main residence, regardless of their surface area. This includes the kitchen if it covers more than 12 m². The following are not included: entrances, hallways, bathrooms, laundry rooms, toilets, etc.

Ordinary household

A group of people who share the same main residence, excluding communities. These people do not necessarily have to be related. An ordinary household may consist of just one person.

Population census

Survey whose purpose is to count the number of residences and the resident population in Monaco and gain an understanding of their main characteristics (sex, age, employment, household characteristics, size and type of residence, modes of transport, etc.).

Professional status

Enables a distinction to be made between employees and other people who work, and to count the number of self-employed people.

Residence 

Separate and independent premises used for habitation.

Residence category

Residences are divided into three categories: main residences, secondary residences and vacant residences.

Residence occupation status

Residences may be occupied by an owner, a tenant, the holder of a Contrat Habitation-Capitalisation (CHC) or a person who is living in the residence for free. For the purposes of the population census, residences occupied by people who are living there for free or under a CHC are grouped under “Other”.

Residence weight

Used to adjust the number of residences which have not provided a response.

Resident

A person who declares their main residence to be in the Principality of Monaco on the census reference date.

Resident population

All people whose normal residence is located with the country. This includes those living in main residences (ordinary residences or mobile homes) and communities.

Scheduled districts

The Principality’s territory is divided into districts established by sovereign ordinance. The scheduled districts are as follows: La Condamine, Fontvieille, Jardin Exotique, Larvotto, Les Moneghetti, Monte-Carlo and La Rousse. Reserved sectors include “Monaco-Ville” and “Ravin Sainte-Dévote”. For the purposes of the population census, the reserved sector of Ravin Sainte-Dévote was included in the Les Moneghetti district.

School enrolment rate

Percentage of young people of a given school age who are in education compared with the total population of the same age.

School population

Includes individuals enrolled, at the time of the census, in an educational institution for the current academic year (including as apprentices), regardless of location.

Secondary residence

A place of residence occupied for part of the year only (at weekends, during holidays or leisure time, for business reasons, etc.).

Socio-economic status

A concept which makes it possible to classify the entire population according to their main situation (studying, in employment, retired, etc.), professional status (employed, self-employed) and employment level (management, non-management).

Statistical confidentiality

This guarantees the confidentiality of information shared and that such information will be used solely for statistical purposes. Very strict rules have been established specifically for population censuses to ensure that the data published cannot be used to directly or indirectly identify respondents or their answers.

Unemployed people

The unemployed population includes people who have declared themselves to be unemployed and non-working people who want to work.

Vacant residence

Unoccupied residence falling under one of the following categories:

  • offered for sale or rent;
  • already allocated to a buyer or tenant and awaiting occupation;
  • awaiting estate settlement;
  • retained by an employer for future use by an employee;
  • kept vacant with no specific purpose in mind by the owner.

Working hours

Enables working people to be classified according to whether their main job is full-time or part-time.

Working population (or residents aged 17 or over who are currently in work)

Includes people who have declared that they are working (regardless of their status).
