Gouvernement Princier de Monaco

2023 Population census

The 2023 Population Census is now based on a new "register-based" method of calculation, which will make it possible to find out the number of inhabitants and housing units, as well as their main characteristics, on an annual and permanent basis. Indeed, it makes it possible to calculate changes in each of these data items every year, without having to carry out an exhaustive survey, which until now has taken place every 8 years.

On these new bases, the resident population is 38,367 as at 31 December 2023.

It breaks down as follows:

The total resident population was recomposed using different registers from the following administrative sources:

  • Monaco City Hall for Monegasque nationals and births in Monaco ;
  • Direction de la Sûreté Publique for foreign residents over the age of majority (residence permit data);
  • Direction de l'Éducation Nationale, de la Jeunesse et des Sports for foreigners aged 3-17 attending school in Monaco.

The "remaining" population, i.e. foreign minors aged between 3 and 17 not attending school in the Principality and foreign children born outside Monaco between 2021 and 2023, is estimated on the basis of data from the 2016 Census, but represents only 2% of the total.

Population growth compared to the last general census in 2016 is 2.8%.
